Was ‘American Idol’s Big Finale Too Big?

May 26th, 2006 in

Taylor Won. Katherine was Robbed. America filled with Morons.

ABC News
May 25, 2006 ?¢‚Ǩ‚Äù The votes are in, and either there are more than 62 million Americans with too much spare time ?¢‚Ǩ¬¶ or 20 million with a penchant for repeat dialing.

Regardless, new “American Idol” champ Taylor Hicks got more votes than any president ever elected, which host Ryan Seacrest proudly pointed out during Wednesday night’s floundering finale.

Hicks, the male muse behind the aptly named “Soul Patrol,” not only had the vocal machinations to seal the deal but a highly regarded mane of prematurely gray locks that set him squarely apart from his competitors.

More impressive than Hicks’ victory was “Idol’s” ratings: An estimated 17 percent of Americans between the ages of 18 and 49 watched the show. That’s almost one-fifth of the under-50 adult population.

Want to know where most of your co-workers were last night? Guess!

‘Idol’ Attempts Musical Comedy

The thing is, if you look at the quality of the show itself, it was a bloated, anti-climactic excuse for two hours of network programming. It reminded me of a kid who keeps stretching a piece of gum from his mouth to the floor over and over. How long can you watch? Then what does he do with it? Put it back in his mouth? Spit it out? It’s used, it’s a little nasty to look at, it’s done. Kind of like Wednesday night’s show.

One of the worst offenses was the “Golden Idol” awards ?¢‚Ǩ‚Äù a segment in which they looked back on the entire season recognizing some of the unusual contestants. The especially silly Randy Jackson Prize for Public Speaking went to the most foul-mouthed of the early auditioners, Rhonetta, who appears via satellite, reprising the performance that earned her the trophy.

The “Brokenote Mountain” piece was no better, taking three auditioning “cowboys” and reuniting them in a taped spoof of “Brokeback Mountain.” They then appeared onstage for a live rendition of “Mamas Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Cowboys.” Garet Johnson, the kid who used to sing to his turkey, had his 15 minutes of fame, shame and ?¢‚Ǩ‚Äù for the rest of us ?¢‚Ǩ‚Äù pain.

Oh, and lest I forget Clay Aiken’s duet with Michael Sandecki, who won a Golden Idol award for the best Aiken impression. Sandecki is perhaps this year’s William Hung, but more than that, Aiken’s hair was frightening. It was a darker version of Florence Henderson’s pageboy from the later “Brady Bunch” episodes. You simply could not enjoy Aiken’s voice looking at that hair, or Sandecki swooning over him on a nearby stool.

They did try to pull out all the stops through celebrity guests. But honestly, their choices ended up flat. Meatloaf sounded like Bo Bice after dental surgery. Toni Braxton’s performance of “In the Ghetto” with Taylor Hicks was inaudible. Dionne Warwick’s joining the 12 finalists in “That’s What Friends Are For” with Burt Bacharach accompanying was about as schmaltzy as TV gets, especially since none of the 12 seemed overly friendly toward each other.

At one point, completely unannounced, Prince emerged for a two-song performance of material from his new album. The tunes were bad enough to ensure they will never hit the radio airwaves.

But if you made it through all that, finally at 9:55 p.m. ET, Seacrest opened the envelope and to absolutely no one’s surprise, Hicks was given the new title.

Was it worth it?

Kelly Goes Home! Finally!

April 27th, 2006 in

She should have been gone 6 people ago, but she has stayed around like a bad infection. We finally got rid of her ignorant, whiney personality. She was endearing in the beginning, about 2 months ago. She’s got a nice back story, but face it, she’s not an American Idol. She was way over do to leave.

And now she has. Let the parties begin.

Is there any drama as to how this will work out now? Paris will be next to go. Then come Elliot and Taylor. My bet is that Taylor goes first, then Elliot. That will bring the final two down to Katherine and Chris. Did anyone NOT see that coming 2 months ago? I pegged Katherine as being the American Idol winner this year and nothing’s happened to change my mind. Does anyone think any differently? Tell us in the forums what you think.

Vote for the Worst - Votefortheworst.com!

April 26th, 2006 in

I knew there was a reason she was still around. She’s terrible! Go Home Kelly! It hurts to listen to her.

Vote for the Worst - Votefortheworst.com!
We’re back! Votefortheworst.com was started in 2004 to support voting for the entertainingly bad contestants on American Idol. Why do we do it? During the initial auditions, the producers of Idol only let certain people through. Many good people are turned away and many bad singers are kept around to see Simon, Paula, and Randy so that America will be entertained.

Why do the producers do this? It’s simple: American Idol is not about singing at all, it’s about making good reality TV and enjoying the cheesy, guilty pleasure of watching bad singing. We agree that the bad singers are entertaining, and we want to acknowledge this fact by encouraging people to make an even funnier show by helping the amusing antagonists stick around.

The show starts out every year encouraging us to point and laugh at all of the bad singers who audition. We want this hilariously bad entertainment to continue into the finals, so we choose the contestant that we feel provides the most entertaining train wreck performances and we start voting for them. We don’t necessarily vote for the worst technical singer; we take into account many factors like if they have crazy personalities, how well they dance and move around the stage, if they have an attitude, if they annoy the general public, if they’re fun to poke fun at, etc. The bottom line is that they have to be entertaining. So we don’t just vote for the worst singer, we vote for the most entertaining contestant using our own criteria.

American Idol lets many contestants into the top 24 who have no chance to win. These people are placed in the competition for ratings, and when they start to perform poorly, the viewing audience laughs and generally votes them out. But VFTW sees keeping these contestants around as a golden opportunity to make a more amusing show. American Idol producers don’t like this though, because they already know who they want to win. They pimp certain contestants from the get-go, and it’s usually incredibly obvious who stands a chance of winning (this year it’s Chris Daughtry with an outside chance on Taylor or Elliott) and who doesn’t (everyone else). We find it boring that the producers have turned this into a 12 week “promote the pre-selected winner” contest, so we want to turn the show on its side to promote someone different.

Fox doesn’t like that we’re voting for the worst, so they’ve called our website “hateful” and “mean spirited”. Doesn’t it seem a tad hypocritical to say that when the show has weeks devoted to making fun of bad auditions? The producers also profited from a “Worst of American Idol” DVD set last year. How can the producers let Simon mock some of the contestants but then let us be called “vicious” when a campaign exists to help those very people?

Ace is In The Hole

April 22nd, 2006 in

Ace went home tonight. I think pulling his hair back did him in. It’s his best feature. Without his dreamy eyes and yummy hair, he’s got nothing. (I’m just quoting the forums here. Those are not my words.)

Kelly was not even in the bottom 3 this time, after butchering the song she sang. It was the worst performance of the entire final 12 compitition and she wasn’t even in the bottom 3. I can’t believe it.

It’s Finally Bucky’s Turn To Go Home!

April 13th, 2006 in

I think he was relieved that it was finally over.

Ace and Elliot shared the bottom 3 tonight. Ace looked genuinely worried and probably should have been. Kelly should have been in the bottom 3 but wasn’t. They had the bottom 3 each sing tonight so they could make it an hour long show and make more money from commercials (maybe that’s my cynical side coming out).

Next week it will be Rod Stewart songs.

Mandisa Goes Home!

April 6th, 2006 in

I loved Mandisa’s voice, but she wasn’t that good this week. Sorry to see her go before Bucky and Kelly.

The bottom three were Mandisa, Elliot, and Paris. None of them are country singers adn none of them sang that well this week.

Next week is Songs of Queen! That should be good. Chris ought to rock the house.

American Idol Top Ten Performances

March 29th, 2006 in

Short and sweet this week, ya’ll, since the boss is screaming for closings and fundings and other work-related stuff… It’s okay though, since there really isn’t too much to say about last night’s show anyway.¬¨‚Ć Songs of the 21st Century was our theme, presenting the finalists the opportunity to stay safely in their comfort zones while entertaining us with songs we all know.¬¨‚Ć Because they’re so recent and all.¬¨‚Ć The problem?¬¨‚Ć Direct-comparison criticism.¬¨‚Ć

To start, that was exactly the problem Lisa had with her Kelly Clarkson song.¬¨‚Ć To be fair, Lisa didn’t do too badly with it, but it was no where near as good as the original.¬¨‚Ć Besides, it’s Kelly Clarkson, and to choose that¬¨‚Ćartist is like asking for a beating from the judges.¬¨‚Ć

Kellie sang what Simon called a “rodeo” song - huh?¬¨‚Ć Suds in the Bucket isn’t what I’d call a rodeo song, but it certainly didn’t seem to work for Kellie.¬¨‚Ć She was okay.¬¨‚Ć

Ace.¬¨‚Ć Okay, here’s the thing - I love that song, but he was barely adequate on the vocals.¬¨‚Ć I can’t ¬¨‚Ćcontinue to support him if he’s going to fail every week to deliver anything impressive on the vocal side of this competition.¬¨‚Ć And also, he didn’t look that great last night either.¬¨‚Ć The hair, it was greasy or something.¬¨‚Ć And the scar-pointing-out?¬¨‚Ć Uh, while I enjoy a peek at the chest, for sure, it was cheesy and over the top.¬¨‚Ć

Taylor sang a song I had never heard before so I have no idea how well he did.  Just as a song without comparing it to anything, I enjoyed it.  Glad he just stood there and sang.  It worked.

Mandisa, Chris, and Katharine went next (in that order) and totally underwhelmed me on every aspect of the performance,¬¨‚Ćfrom song choices to delivery to the way they looked.¬¨‚Ć Mandisa screamed and went sharp, Chris trotted out his pony for one more trick, and Kat was… well, I didn’t care for it AT ALL.¬¨‚Ć Xtina’s tricky, and I didn’t think she was anywhere near as good as the judges thought.

The last three were my favorites of the night: Bucky, Paris, and Elliott.¬¨‚Ć Bucky singing Tim McGraw was awesome.¬¨‚Ć His voice is very suited to that style, and he rocked the cowboy hat.¬¨‚Ć Paris’ song was fun and young and sexy and I liked her.¬¨‚Ć Simon calling her “a little girl playing dress up as Beyonce” was probably accurate, but she gave a good show.¬¨‚Ć Last of the night was Elliott, with a tricked up version of I Don’t Wanna Be.¬¨‚Ć I liked it.¬¨‚Ć I think he did a good job changing the song to suit his style and to avoid comparison to both Bo from last season and the original artist, Gavin Degraw.¬¨‚Ć He’s looking better, too, so that’s always a plus.¬¨‚Ć

Once Ace gets the boot, and that’ll be any week now, ya’ll, seriously, I am prepared to fully back Elliott and Mandisa.¬¨‚Ć They are my two favorites, even though Mandisa let me down this week.¬¨‚Ć Hopefull she’ll come back strong next week.

Tonight?¬¨‚Ć Results, with a guest appearance by Shakira and Wyclef Jean.¬¨‚Ć Who hits the seal tonight?¬¨‚Ć Who’s going home?¬¨‚Ć Come talk about it in the forums!

You know the phrase ‚Äö?Ñ??Too good to be true‚Äö?Ñ???¬¨‚Ć Well, that‚Äö?Ñ?¥s how I feel right about now.¬¨‚Ć The eliminations this season have been so perfectly ordered, so pleasingly in tune with what I‚Äö?Ñ?¥ve wanted that it‚Äö?Ñ?¥s starting to scare me.¬¨‚Ć Seriously, the price for this is gonna be steep.¬¨‚Ć But still‚Äö?Ѭ? how can I not be giddy?

There is, of course, a downside, but it‚Äö?Ñ?¥s minor and entirely personal so we‚Äö?Ñ?¥ll skip it for now.¬¨‚Ć First, let me sneak in a compliment for Ryan‚Äö?Ñ?¥s gorgeous suit.¬¨‚Ć He is looking so good this year!¬¨‚Ć And his snark?¬¨‚Ć It is wicked.¬¨‚Ć Especially when directed in a derogatory manner at Hickler‚Äö?Ѭ? but that‚Äö?Ñ?¥s whole ‚Äö?Ñ??nother subject so we‚Äö?Ñ?¥ll just move on.

Pimpomercial?¬¨‚Ć The only thing I have to say about it is why oh why couldn‚Äö?Ñ?¥t Ace have been shirtless?¬¨‚Ć I mean, really, they‚Äö?Ñ?¥re at the beach, right?¬¨‚Ć I don‚Äö?Ñ?¥t think it‚Äö?Ñ?¥s too much to ask, do you?

Barry impressed me yet again with his professionalism and genuine likeability.¬¨‚Ć Has he always been this friendly and‚Äö?Ѭ? good-natured?¬¨‚Ć I don‚Äö?Ñ?¥t know why, but I‚Äö?Ñ?¥ve never before paid enough attention to him in general to notice.¬¨‚Ć Bad me.¬¨‚Ć He‚Äö?Ñ?¥s pretty awesome.

Since the shows are so short and there are still so many contestants left, it really feels like Ryan is rushingthroughtheresults!¬¨‚Ć So much so that there isn‚Äö?Ñ?¥t even enough time to worry as he goes down the list: Ace ‚Äö?Ñ?¨ safe; Mandisa ‚Äö?Ñ?¨ safe; Elliott ‚Äö?Ñ?¨ safe (and here can I just interject a big ol‚Äö?Ñ?¥ Hell Yeah! Because the speculation/spoilers were wrong!); Kellie ‚Äö?Ñ?¨ safe; Chris ‚Äö?Ñ?¨ safe; Paris ‚Äö?Ñ?¨ safe; Kat ‚Äö?Ñ?¨ safe; and then we jump over to Taylor, who is also safe, which leaves us with a very unsurprising bottom three of Kevin, Lisa, and Bucky.

At this point in the show, my dear daughter, aged 8, begins to whine.¬¨‚Ć She adores Kevin.¬¨‚Ć When RyRy tells us that Lisa is safe, and then Bucky, too, and that Kevin is leaving us, she starts to cry.¬¨‚Ć Yes, cry.¬¨‚Ć Like real tears and everything.¬¨‚Ć This is the downside of which I spoke.¬¨‚Ć I tried very hard not to clap and smile, knowing how badly she would take it.¬¨‚Ć Still‚Äö?Ѭ? inside, you know, I was cheering away!¬¨‚Ć

Did America get it right? ¬¨‚ĆAnd what do you think about next week‚Äö?Ñ?¥s theme: Music of the 21st Century?¬¨‚Ć Predictions? ¬¨‚ĆCome talk about it in the forums!¬¨‚Ć

AI - Top 11 Performances

March 22nd, 2006 in

From start to finish, this week’s show was so much better than last week!¬¨‚ĆOur theme was Music of the 1950’s, with special coaching from Barry Manilow himself.¬¨‚Ƭ¨‚ĆOnce again, I am pleasantly surprised by his contributions to the hamsters’ performances.¬¨‚Ć He brought constructive criticism and genuine help -¬¨‚Ćit didn’t go unnoticed!¬¨‚Ć Good job, Barry!

We start the show with Mandisa, singing I Don’t Hurt Anymore.¬¨‚Ć And right out of the gate, we have our first stellar performance of the night.¬¨‚Ć She was less “shouty” than in previous weeks, which helped her power-notes hit all the harder.¬¨‚Ć Judges loved it, too, with Simon going so far as to say he “absolutely loved it.”¬¨‚Ć I give her a 9 out of 10.¬¨‚Ć

Second up was Bucky.¬¨‚Ć Thankfully, the Breck-hair is¬¨‚Ćtaking a¬¨‚Ćhiatus this week.¬¨‚Ć He sang Buddy Holly’s Oh Boy!¬¨‚Ć Again with the growling.¬¨‚Ć Oy.¬¨‚Ć Overall, it was okay, nothing special.¬¨‚Ć I can imagine him doing really well with certain rough country tunes and styles, and I would like him all the better on it, but in this competition, he’s being outsung week in and week out.¬¨‚Ć 6/10

Third in line was Paris.  Singing one of my all-time favorite songs: Fever.  I love that she dressed the part.  And the vocals?  Whoa.  I was impressed, not only with the more traditional beginning, but also with her variation and originality on the middle/end.  This jazzy/bluesy style really suits her voice.  9.5/10

Next was Chris with I Walk the Line, by Johnny Cash.¬¨‚Ć I am not going to go into all the reasons I struggle week after week with what to say about this guy.¬¨‚Ć I like him; I can’t stand him.¬¨‚Ć Ugggh!¬¨‚Ć He pisses me off with his sameness every week, but dammit, the sameness is good.¬¨‚Ć I actually enjoyed his version of this song, though to be fair, it wasn’t his “arrangement” -¬¨‚ĆLIVE did a cover of the song in this style already, so once again, he merely copied an already existing alt-rock version.¬¨‚Ć But still, I enjoyed it.¬¨‚Ć 8/10

Kat sings Ella Fitzgerald next - Come Rain or Come Shine.  Woo-hoo, it is good.  It is like really really good.  It was a great song for her - being sexy and sultry and all.  And she delivered an awesome performance of it, much to my surprise.  Her back-lit starting pose was a bit over the top, but it worked.  9/10

Sixth up was Taylor, our resident “silver fox”.¬¨‚Ć This performance?¬¨‚Ć Not so foxy, in my opinion.¬¨‚Ć The blue suit was gross.¬¨‚Ć He sang Buddy Holly’s Not Fade Away.¬¨‚Ć Jive-y and rocky-y and not at all suited to his vocal abilites.¬¨‚Ć It was repetitive and mostly consisted of him chanting the verses and wailing the chorus.¬¨‚Ć Not impressed.¬¨‚Ć 5/10

Lisa sang Why Do Fools Fall In Love?¬¨‚Ć I think this was a better song choice for her.¬¨‚Ć It was young and kicky and cutesy, and she did a pretty good job with it.¬¨‚Ć The problem is that when you look at her compared to the other remaining women in this competition, she always tends to fall short of living up to the standards they set.¬¨‚Ć All the other ladies’ sang that bluesy jazz style so freakin’ well, her little pop number seemed amateurish.¬¨‚Ć It wasn’t bad, but in comparison, it was probably the weakest female performance of the night.¬¨‚Ć 7/10

Next up?¬¨‚Ć Kevin, singing When I Fall In Love.¬¨‚Ć I was prepared to hate him this week, but alas, the boy did a decent job.¬¨‚Ć Still annoying with the lispy vocals, but better than I expected.¬¨‚Ć I am not a fan or anything, but there were worse performances in the show… 7/10

Elliott sang Teach Me Tonight.¬¨‚Ć The bad?¬¨‚Ć In the first verse, he overdid the “R”s on the lyric learn.¬¨‚Ć Sounded like “Lurrrrrn”.¬¨‚Ć The good?¬¨‚Ć Everything else.¬¨‚Ć Amazing job with a very difficult song.¬¨‚Ć I’m impressed.¬¨‚Ć Also, the little scruffy thing with the facial hair?¬¨‚Ć It works for him.¬¨‚Ć He’s not exactly an attractive guy, but he has a certain appeal.¬¨‚Ć 8.5/10

Kellie, Kellie, Kellie.¬¨‚Ć Patsy Cline was not a surprise, although¬¨‚Ćthe song chioce was.¬¨‚Ć I expected Crazy, but got Walkin’ After Midnight.¬¨‚Ć It was good.¬¨‚Ć I can’t tell you how annoying I find her hickity-schtick, but on this song, in this performance, she was alright.¬¨‚Ć Compared to the others of the night, I give her a 7 out of 10.

Last up, my sweetheart Ace.¬¨‚Ć In the Still of the Night - a jazzed up arrangement.¬¨‚Ć It could have been bad, oh-so-very-bad.¬¨‚Ć Trainwreck of magnificent proportions.¬¨‚Ć Instead, it was actually very good.¬¨‚Ć I didn’t care for the falsetto at the end, and the beginning was a bit weak, but right there in the middle, as he hit his stride and even threw in a little growly lyric or two?¬¨‚Ć Swoon-worthy.¬¨‚Ć I hope the story arc for this guy is actually what seems so obvious: great first performance followed by several weeks of mediocrity, only to emerge “from no where” to razzle and dazzle us with his true vocal abilities.¬¨‚Ć Okay, I know there are better singers, but I wouldn’t mind keeping him around for a while, if only for decoration.¬¨‚Ć Oh, yeah, he gets an 8/10.

So that’s it, all the grades are in.¬¨‚Ć My predictions?¬¨‚Ć Well, if it were based on tonight’s performances alone, I’d put Taylor, Bucky, and probably Lisa in the bottom three.¬¨‚Ć But since we have to take into consideration the enormous fan support Taylor has, he’ll surely be safe.¬¨‚Ć That will hopefully put Kevin in the B3.¬¨‚Ć I think either Bucky or Lisa will be goners tonight.¬¨‚Ć Watch and see… and until then, come chat about it in the forums!
